Energy transition is the way taken by Elektroprivreda Srbije, a way that is not challenged, but the key task on this way must be ensuring energy security for our citizens and economy, said Dušan Živković, Acting General Director of EPS JSC at the EPCG NET Energy Symposium in Budva.
- Being aware of the necessity of the decarbonization process, we have been working intensively for ten years on enhancing the existing production capacities in the hydro sector, so the successful rehabilitation of several hydro power plants has provided that a share of green energy in 2023 is 36.5 percent. In addition, the projects of the first wind farm Kostolac and the solar power plant Petka were being developed. With the hydrological situation at the level it was in 2023, EPS could produce even more than 45% from renewable energy sources in 2030, if all projects that are now entering the phase of implementation based on PPA are implemented, as well as the new projects - Živković said during the panel discussion called "Just transition and implementation of RES projects".
As priority and most important projects within the scope of RES, Živković pointed out the construction of the pumped-storage hydro power plant Bistrica and the 1 GW solar project, which will be implemented through the strategic partnership between Serbia and the consortium led by Hyundai Engineering.
- The energy crisis has had consequences for the decarbonization process, both energy and financial. All countries have turned to only one priority, ensuring energy security. The only true way towards this goal is diversification of sources, and this is the direction of development of Elektroprivreda Srbije - Živkovic said.
